VOLUNTEER PONY RIDES/ GROOMING/ CARETAKING EXPERIENCE

CANNOLI/ANGUS

Suggested $30 Donation/child for volunteer riding, grooming and caretaking experience only in lieu of Sanctuary Experience

Meet Angus, a remarkable 12-year-old Morgan gelding who found his way to us through rescue. In a previous chapter of his life, he diligently pulled an Amish buggy cart, embodying strength and purpose. Today, Angus has embraced a new role as a gentle soul who generously shares his hugs with everyone he encounters. His patience and kindness shine brightly, making him a cherished companion for all our visitors.

Then there's Cannoli, at 29 years young, he's a grand Italian Haflinger with a heart as immense as his size. His sweetness is palpable, and his name fittingly captures the essence of his nature. Angus and Cannoli extend a warm invitation to children of all ages to embark on memorable rides, whether bareback or in the English style.

Every pony experience is a private adventure, thoughtfully tailored to each child's interests and abilities. Through these experiences, we impart valuable knowledge, teaching proper tacking, horse care, and riding techniques. We prioritize safety, especially for our young riders, encouraging them to bring their own helmets. However, we're equipped to provide helmets for children as well, ensuring that no child embarks on a ride without this essential protection.

Our sanctuary isn't just a place to volunteer; it's a haven of friendship and learning, where bonds are forged between children and these magnificent creatures.

Angus and Cannoli, each with their own story, stand as ambassadors of patience, empathy, and connection. With their guidance, we strive to create moments of joy and growth for every child who steps into their world.

All services are volunteer and have a suggested donation which is how we support the sanctuary. However since our sanctuary is run by volunteers you are always welcome to decline the suggested donation.  This 50 minute volunteer experience helps keep our horses active and well groomed.

MIKE

The "show pony" turned farm pony

Mike, a stunning 21-year-old Paint show pony, has a story woven with love, triumph, and a bond that stood the test of time.

During the uncertain days of COVID, our daughter found solace in the saddle of this incredible pony. With his patient heart and steady spirit, Mike carried her through those years, teaching her not just the art of riding but the deeper lessons of trust, resilience, and partnership.

It was on Mike’s back that she earned her first blue ribbon, a moment forever etched in our hearts. But as the years passed, she eventually outgrew him, though their connection never faded. No matter how much time passed, Mike remained her heart horse—the one who shaped her into the rider she became.

We visited him often, returning to his barn just to see his familiar face, to brush his coat, and to whisper gratitude into his ear.
As time wore on, so did Mike’s body, and he eventually became lame. His show days were behind him, and he needed a soft place to land—a place where he could rest, be loved, and simply be a horse.

When the opportunity came to bring him home to our sanctuary, there was no hesitation. The pony who gave our daughter her first blue ribbon deserved nothing less than a loving retirement.

Now, Mike spends his days surrounded by the same love he gave so freely. He’s no longer in the show ring, but he’s still a champion in our eyes. His story is a reminder that some bonds never break, and some horses never truly leave the hearts they’ve touched. 💙🐴

SCOOTALOO

Mini Pony

Allow us to introduce you to the heartwarming spirit of Scootaloo, a miniature pony mare whose journey brought her to us from the same compassionate organization that brought Angus and Cannoli into our fold.

At around 29 years old, Scootaloo embodies both resilience and sweetness. While her age might be a bit of a mystery, her heart shines bright with love and affection.

Scootaloo is a shining example of growth and transformation. With each passing day, she's honing her people skills, blossoming into a pony who welcomes interaction and connection. Her genuine enthusiasm for life finds its expression in one simple joy: treats. Those little treasures that can be tenderly mashed with her petite teeth are met with boundless delight.

Around all children, Scootaloo's gentleness shines. Her calm and patient nature makes her a cherished friend for every young visitor. With her by their side, children can experience the magic of a genuine connection with a pony who understands the language of love and friendship.

In Scootaloo, we've found not just a rescue, but a soul who mirrors the essence of our sanctuary – one of growth, second chances, and the boundless capacity for giving and receiving love. Her story is interwoven with those of the other animals that grace our haven, creating a tapestry of compassion, hope, and shared experiences.

DOGS

KOPI & STELLA

Meet our dynamic brother and sister duo-Maremma Italian Sheepdogs, entrusted with the crucial role of safeguarding our beloved pig sisters from any potential threats.

These furry guardians, however, have a soft spot that shines just as brightly – they are nothing short of affectionate puppies, yearning for nothing more than to leap into the laps of our visitors, showering them with joyful kisses.

In their protective roles, they diligently watch over their pig companions, ensuring their safety and well-being. Yet, beneath their vigilant exteriors lies a wellspring of warmth and affection. Their friendship with the pigs is heartwarming; they share a bond that transcends species, united by a camaraderie that's evident in every wag of their tails.

What sets this duo apart is their appetites, closely aligned with the pigs they hold dear. They share meals with their pig sisters, illustrating a level of companionship and empathy that's as touching as it is endearing.

So, whether they're performing their guardian duties or indulging in moments of playfulness, these brother and sister pups embody the heart and soul of our sanctuary. They remind us that even the most devoted protectors can be tender-hearted souls, eager to share their love with all who visit.

PIGS

PORKEY, PRISSY, PRINCESS PENELOPE, PIGTAIL AKA BOSS HOG

Allow us to introduce you to our delightful pet pot belly pig sisters, the true embodiment of affection and charm. These endearing siblings have mastered the art of spreading joy through cuddles, snuggles, and their undeniable love for treats.

But that's not all – they've earned a reputation for their unique request: "pig bowling," or in simpler terms, those irresistible belly rubs that they adore.

Life's simple pleasures find their expression as they indulge in a leisurely mud bath within their very own mud pool. It's a ritual they relish, showcasing their playful natures and carefree spirits. Yet, amidst all the frolicking, it's their interactions with our visitors that truly set them apart.

With hearts as big as their appetites for treats, these piggy sisters leave an indelible mark on those who cross their paths. They offer a glimpse into their sweet personalities, their gestures and grunts speaking volumes about their affection and curiosity.

In their presence, you're not just meeting pigs; you're encountering four gentle souls who embody the essence of our sanctuary – a place of connection, joy, and the unconditional love that animals so beautifully share.

GUINEA PIGS

PIP & SQUEAK

Meet our endearing Guinea Pig brothers, affectionately christened by our wonderful community. These little fellows have captured our hearts with their irresistible charm.

They relish the warmth of human touch, thriving in the loving embrace of those who hold them close. Listen closely, and you'll hear the symphony of their contentment – cute squeak noises that dance in the air whenever happiness fills their hearts.

Their calm demeanor is truly remarkable; they'll serenely nestle into your arms, inviting you to share moments of tranquility together.

APRIL & CHICKY

April

April, a tale of rescue and resilience. This Katahdin hair sheep found her way to us from Georgia, saved by the compassion of one of our volunteers.

Though she had a challenging start in life as a premature lamb, she's blossomed into a spirited soul who loves nothing more than to hop and jump alongside kids.

Chicky, April’s trusty sidekick, is Chicky the Welsummer chicken, who found her way to our sanctuary thanks to dear visitors who lovingly hatched her. When they moved, they wanted to ensure she had a safe and loving home, and she found just that here.

Chicky may be small, but her presence is mighty. She quickly became April’s constant companion, always nearby, as if she knew she belonged right by her side. Their friendship is a sweet reminder that love comes in all shapes and sizes—and sometimes, the most unexpected friendships turn out to be the most special. ❤️🐔

PRADA & GUCCI

The Barn Cats

Meet Prada and Gucci, the dynamic duo who keep our barn running smoothly—one paw at a time! These two beautiful and spirited barn cats came to us from Middleburg Humane Foundation, and from the moment they arrived, they made themselves right at home.

Prada, the "Maine Coon" look alike and sophisticated one, is always on high alert, watching over the barn with a quiet confidence. She’s a natural hunter, keeping our feed rooms and stalls free of any unwelcome visitors.

Gucci, on the other hand, is the charmingly loving one, always up for a cuddle (or a nap in the sun). Her sweet nature keep us in snuggles, while her soft purrs remind us that even the hardest-working barn cats need a little love.

Together, Prada and Gucci are more than just our rodent control team—they are beloved members of our sanctuary family. Whether they’re sunbathing on the picnic tables, weaving between our legs at feeding time, or greeting visitors with a curious stare, these two have found their forever home here.

We’re so grateful to Middleburg Humane Foundation for giving them a second chance, and we can’t imagine our barn without them!

We are the Garney family, and our journey has been one of compassion and transformation. Our love for adoption began when we adopted our two wonderful children 17 years ago, igniting a passion for building families through adoption. To further this mission, we established an adoption support group alongside our agency, fostering connections and hope within our community. In the tapestry of time, we find ourselves at Haven Hills Farm and Sanctuary, guided by a higher purpose. Our path took an unexpected turn when our son, with special needs, discovered a newfound sense of purpose volunteering at a local animal rescue sanctuary. This experience, a turning point, kindled a deep connection for my son with the animals and a profound sense of accomplishment. Our daughter, inspired by her brother, joined in volunteering with the horses, weaving us further into this world of compassion and care. Renee Small, the sanctuary owner and our guiding light, became our mentor. Under her tutelage, our family learned the art of nurturing and advocating for animals in need. This transformative bond awakened our hearts to the essence of rescue and adoption. Now, as stewards of Haven Hills Farm and Sanctuary, we aspire to share the blessings we've received. Our desire is to extend the same love and knowledge to our community through volunteering with sanctuary excursions, equine caretaking and riding, and volunteer homeschool field trips. Every corner of our sanctuary resonates with the echo of our experiences, shaping a sanctuary that not only nurtures animals but also nurtures the souls of all who visit. When you support our volunteering sanctuary excursions, know that your generosity directly sustains and cares for our beloved animals. Every dime is a promise fulfilled – a promise to provide nourishment, shelter, and unwavering care. Our journey is a tapestry woven by love, resilience, and the belief that the kindness we give to these animals ripples outwards, embracing our community in its warmth.
